Case Hardened Blue Gems: Patterns, Seeds & Prices

In 2023, the owner of an AK-47 Case Hardened with pattern seed #661 turned down an offer of one million dollars. The same skin, in the same wear, with a different seed, sells for about $70. No other item in CS2 has a price range that wide - and it's all decided by a single number assigned at the moment the skin dropped.
What the seed actually does
Every Case Hardened skin takes its look from one metallic texture of blue, purple and gold. The pattern seed (0-1000) decides which part of that texture lands on the weapon's body. Most seeds produce a scattered mix. A handful place a large, unbroken field of blue on the most visible surface - the "blue gem". The more blue on the playside, the higher the tier, and prices climb exponentially with coverage.
The famous seeds
On the AK-47, #661 is the undisputed king - a near-full playside of blue - followed by top-tier seeds like #670, #955 and #179. On the Karambit, seed #387 produced the knife community calls the most valuable item in the game, with estimates around $1.5M. Five-Seven and Flip Knife blue gems have their own ladders. Tier-1 seeds are documented and counted - there are only a few dozen of each - which is precisely what makes them function like fixed-supply collectibles.
Buying without getting burned
Three rules. First, always verify the seed yourself - pull the inspect link through our inspector; never trust a screenshot, since lighting angles can fake coverage. Second, playside beats backside: blue on the side you see in-game is what the market pays for. Third, check sale history, not listings - blue gem asking prices are aspirational, and real sales often close far below them. For everything below gem tier, the ordinary Case Hardened price is your anchor: if a seller can't explain exactly why their seed deserves a premium, it doesn't.
